You have probably heard some talk recently about a new fuel product called Biodiesel or Soydiesel. Consumers Cooperative Society now has SoyPOWER Biodiesel in storage at our Iowa City refined fuels bulk plant. The purpose of this comment page is to help introduce you to this product and hopefully answer some of the questions you may have.
Consumers Coop is handling SoyPOWER brand Biodiesel, which is a high quality, premium, refined biodiesel made from 100% soybean oil. SoyPOWER is manufactured by West Central Coop in Ralston, IA. This high purity fuel improves air quality by reducing exhaust emissions of diesel engines without sacrificing engine performance and fuel economy. SoyPOWER has a 52 cetane value to aid in easy engine starts and smooth engine performance. SoyPOWER Biodiesel is a mild solvent that will clean the fuel system and injectors for peak engine performance. SoyPOWER also increases the lubricity of diesel fuel to reduce wear and extend the life of the engine and fuel system components.
SoyPOWER is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a fuel and fuel additive and is also classified as an alternative fuel by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). SoyPOWER has been tested by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). The ASTM is the premier standard setting organization for fuels and additives in the U.S.A. SoyPOWER meets or exceeds the ASTM PS 121 Biodiesel specifications, the highest attainable at this time.
Technical tests, proven usage, stringent standards and equipment warranties reinforce the quality of SoyPOWER Biodiesel. Years of comprehensive testing by independent sources, such as: Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, and Stanadyne, all reinforce the quality and performance of Biodiesel. “We’re excited to be able to support the use of Biodiesel in our products,” noted Ted Breidenbach, Manager of Worldwide Engine Engineering for John Deere Power Systems. (December 3, 2001) “Biodiesel is a valuable tool for helping reduce engine emissions. It also stands as one of the linchpins in the movement to develop alternative uses for commodity products that can ultimately deliver more value to our producer customers.”
Basic Terminology: Biodiesel is the pure, or 100 percent, biodiesel fuel. It is referred to as B100 or "neat" fuel.
A biodiesel blend is pure biodiesel blended with petroleum diesel. Biodiesel blends are referred to as Bxx. The xx indicates the amount of biodiesel in the blend (i.e., a B2 blend is 2 percent biodiesel and 98 percent petroleum diesel.
Consumers Coop can provide SoyPOWER Biodiesel blends at this time, all you need to do is specify the blend percentage you wish to use, when ordering your fuel. It is recommended that you choose low percentage blends to start, this will keep your cost down and will be a seamless transition from straight petroleum diesel.
